VISIT THE HISTORICAL RUINS OF WIANG KUM KAM IN CHIANG MAI

The origin of the historical complex dates back to 1288 when King Mengrai moved the capital of the Lanna kingdom from Chiang Rai to the location of Wiang Kum Kam on the banks of the Ping River. Without having chosen the site by counting the possible floods, they made that after the first and more serious ones King Mengrai decided to move the city to the opposite banks much drier and drained becoming the new location in the current Chiang Mai. After the abandonment of Wiang Kum Kam and the successive floods and land movements, the old city was completely buried.

The Historical Ruins of Wiang Kum Kam are located in Chang Kham where also is the origin of the discovery of the remains of this forgotten city, its main temple or Wat Chang Kham where carvings and tables were discovered telling the history of the site and that made archaeologists discover the historical complex.

Many of them already knew something because in the same area is the famous Chedi or Wat Chedi Liam with its five levels and example of the Mon architecture that dominated the region (in fact it is very influenced by Wat Phra that was in Haripunchai, capital of the Mon kingdom and the current Lamphun) until his defeat by King Mengrai. The chedi is a fantastic example of the history of the time as it mixes elements of the Hindu tradition and the Buddhist tradition so characteristic of the time and the Mon culture. In fact it is now known that it was one of the few buildings that survived the floods that caused the settlement to be abandoned.

After the archaeological work, the greatness and importance of the historical complex was discovered. Today, the excavations have been completed, although work is still underway to preserve the elements. The best way to visit the Ruins of Wiang Kum Kam is by bike or because the area is too big to walk.
